H&S SPOTLIGHT ON: NANCY ROARK
It’s August, and as everyone starts thinking of the new school year approaching, Herbert & Satterwhite would like to spotlight its newest addition, Nancy Roark.
Best Trial Story: It was my very first trial! My first case was an out of town trial, and I was so excited and nervous, I was up at 4:00 a.m. in my hotel room, reading and rehearsing transcripts to be read into the record (by yours truly). I was also busy taking a last look at the trial boxes (which I was guarding with my life) to make sure I had 3 copies of everything and anything, (maybe even including the kitchen sink)!
At 7:00 a.m., I was off to Court with all trial boxes and blown-up foam board Exhibits, as I had made the arrangements with the Sheriff’s office to get into Court and set up before the 9:00 a.m. trial started. I had everything set up, including legal pads, pens, and highlighters neatly at each seat of the table where my attorneys and client would be seated. We were ready!
Just before trial was to begin, my attorneys and our client walked into the Courtroom. I was so proud of myself. I just knew they were going to tell me I did a great job and request me on every trial thereafter! The lead attorney spotted me in the Courtroom, where I was standing what I thought was the perfect set up. As he got closer to me, I noticed he had what appeared to be an angry look. I thought he must be in “trial mode” and extremely focused, as I was totally confident I had done my job well. UNTIL……I heard the words (which echo in my mind to this day) “You have us set up on the wrong side, we are defense counsel, Plaintiff sits on the side of the jury.” Of course, just as he finished uttering those words to me, in comes Plaintiff’s counsel to catch us as we were hustling to move everything, etc. Needless-to-say, my self-assurance went totally out the door. I did, however, read in one transcript, and thank goodness I did not mispronounce anything, or nervously stumble over words (I practically knew the transcript word-for-word, as I had diligently prepared). Thankfully, we got a defense verdict! Everyone was happy, and all was forgiven (until the next learning moment)!
Favorite place to visit or best vacation ever: Southern California!!! I am a native Californian, who grew up in a touristy beach town in San Diego, with lots of sun, sand, and surf, and a beach that goes for miles!
The perfect vacation day: Is a day at the beach, swimming and boogie boarding in the surf, and watching surfers catch the perfect wave! Watching the beautiful and serene sunsets are a California classic! Catching the famous west coast “green flash” is a plus!!!
Most daring thing I’ve ever done: Diving off a cliff…
Worst job I ever had (present job not included): Mucking stalls! When I was growing up, my parents gave me riding lessons for my birthday. Those lessons were a little expensive, so after about 6 months, if I wanted to continue them, I was going to have to pay for them myself. My riding instructor took pity on me and got the stables to hire me on Saturdays, mucking stalls and tacking horses, in exchange for riding lessons. Some of those Saturdays were less than appealing to say the least, especially when it was 80 degrees and up!
Favorite movie: To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck, What Lies Beneath with Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford, and The Pelican Brief with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. I have watched these movies over-and-over again through the years, and still enjoy them!
Favorite artist (singer, actor, etc.): Diana Krall, Alecia Keys, Aerosmith, Bruno Mars (Bruno has got the greatest dance moves with every song). I would also include Kevin Hart and the Rock - these 2 guys together have the greatest chemistry, and they are hilarious together! I can’t leave out Keanu Reeves either (John Wick, need I say more).
Best advice you’ve ever received: The KISS rule. Less is more with keeping it simple, and not over complicating things!
